Tika Sumpter‘s career in entertainment started as a TV host. After a hosting stint from 2004 to 2005, she made her acting debut as Layla Williamson in the ABC daytime soap opera One Life to Live. At the same time, she guest-starred in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. On the big screen, she first appeared with an uncredited role in the 2009 film Brooklyn’s Finest. The following year, she had her first credited part in the movie Stomp the Yard: Homecoming.

She also played a minor role in the action-thriller starring Angelina Jolie Salt. Later in 2011, she appeared in the films Whisper Me a Lullaby and What’s Your Number? It was also during this year that she starred as Raina Thorpe in several episodes of Gossip Girl, as well as played Jenna Rice in The CW’s The Game. She simultaneously had roles in the films Think Like a Man and Sparkle.

After appearing in the pilot episode of Being Mary Jane, she starred as Candace Young in the TV series The Haves and the Have Nots. She has been starring on the said show since 2013. Despite being a regular cast there, Sumpter continued working on other TV projects. For instance, she currently stars as Alicia Jackson in the sitcom Mixed-ish. The actress was also praised for her portrayal of Michelle Obama in the biographical film Southside with You. Also, she recently starred as Maddie Wachowski in Sonic the Hedgehog.

Tika Sumpter has been active almost all her life. As a young girl, she attended dance classes and then competitive cheerleading later. Recently, though, she tried something else: Pure Barre, which for her was the hardest workout she’s done. Aside from taking Pure Barre classes twice or thrice per week, she also stays in top shape by having Zumba sessions and exercising with a trainer.
