Career in France and Breakthrough in Hollywood

Mélanie Laurent was born on February 21, 1983 in Paris, Île-de-France, France to ballerina Annick and voiceover actor Pierre Laurent. While watching her best friend’s father work on the set of the film Asterix and Obelix, actor Gérard Depardieu asked her if she wanted to be in movies, to which she said “why not?”.

Depardieu told her not to take any drama classes because she already has the necessary skills. By the time she was 16, she was given a part in The Bridge, starring Depardieu. Before that, she made her television debut with a guest appearance in the French TV series Les malheurs de Sophie.

After working with Depardieu, she appeared in the television film Route de nuit and in the movie Ceci est mon corps. In 2002, she starred as Carole in Michel Blanc’s Summer Things. This was followed by the short film La Faucheuse and the TV film Jean Moulin, une affaire française.

During the next few years, she continued landing parts in a variety of movies, including Snowboarder (2003), Rice Rhapsody (2004), The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005), Days of Glory (2006), and Dikkenek (2006), for which she was awarded the Étoiles d’Or for Best Female Newcomer.

Also in 2006, she landed the role of Lili Tellier in Don’t Worry, I’m Fine, for which she gained various awards including a Lumière Award for Most Promising Young Actress and an Étoiles d’Or for Best Female Newcomer, as well as a César Award for Most Promising Actress.

In 2008, she directed and wrote the short film De moins en moins. It was nominated at the 61st Annual Cannes Film Festival for Best Short Film. She was supposed to direct her first play, Mi-cuit cœur pistache at the Théâtre Marigny in Paris in January 2009 but had to leave the project after she was cast as Shoshanna Dreyfus in Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 film Inglourious Basterds.

Her role as Shoshanna gained her international stardom, for which she also received numerous awards, including an Online Film Critics Society Award for Best Actress and an Austin Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress. She was also nominated for an Empire Award for Best Actress, as well as a Saturn Award for Best Actress.

Inglourious Basterds was critically acclaimed and was also a commercial hit, earning over $300 million on a $75 million budget. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Picture.

She had also planned to direct the feature film titled Putain de pluie!, which she also co-wrote. It was originally set for filming in 2009 but was postponed because of her commitment to Inglourious Basterds. When the film’s planning resumed, she offered the lead role to Natalie Portman but she declined because of the script’s language.

Recent Films and Plastic Surgery Rumors

Later in 2009, she portrayed Anne-Marie Jacquet, a violinist, in Radu Mihăileanu’s Le Concert, which she called “a smart movie and a popular movie”. In 2010, she starred in the French film The Round Up opposite Jean Reno. The following year, she starred alongside Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer in the romantic comedy-drama Beginners.

The film premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received good reviews from critics. It was also a commercial success, earning over $14 million on just a $3.2 million budget. She next appeared in 2013’s Night Train to Lisbon.

It was followed by 2013’s Now You See Me, starring alongside Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Morgan Freeman. Reception for the film was mixed but it was a huge commercial success, earning over $300 million on a $75 million budget. She recently starred in the 2014 films Aloft and Enemy.

Since becoming a household name in the US, Laurent has since sparked interest among fans and critics alike. With this are the reports that the Inglourious Basterds actress underwent plastic surgery, particularly a tipoplasty. This procedure is a nose job that just works on the tip of the nose.

The original tip of her nose was protruding a little bit, making it a distinctive feature. Rumors of a tipoplasty began after she stepped out with a more refined nose, with the tip straightened out. Laurent is also being accused of having a breast augmentation as her cup size seemed to have increased. The rumors are persistent but the French actress chose to ignore the issue.
