Rachel Griffiths was born on December 18, 1968 in Melbourne, Australia. She completed her degree from the Victoria College, Rusden, after which she joined a community theater group. In 1994, she made her film debut in the Australian feature Muriel’s Wedding, which also became her breakout role and for which she won a Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
She then starred in the British films Jude and My Son the Fanatic in the late 1990s. Her first Hollywood debut was in the romantic comedy film My Best Friend’s Wedding. In 1998, she portrayed Hilary du Pré in the movie Hilary and Jackie, for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In the 2000s, she acted in the films Blow, Ned Kelly, and Step Up. She also received acclaim for her performance of Brenda Chenowith in the HBO series Six Feet Under, for which she also got Primetime Emmy nominations. After this, she played Sarah Walker in Brothers and Sisters, her performance still receiving critical praise.
