Susan Kelechi Watson was born on 11 November 1981 in Brooklyn, New York. After high school, she attended Howard University where she finished her BFA degree. She then got her MFA from the Tisch School of the Arts. In 2004, she started her professional acting debut with guest roles on Hack and The Jury. That same year, she had a recurring role as Emma St. Claire on Third Watch.

She next appeared in 3 episodes of Kidnapped and NCIS in the late 2000s. She continued her career in the 2010s, becoming known for playing Janet on Louie. She next appeared as Ellie on The Blacklist and as Cindy on The Following. She gained further success on the small screen as Beth Pearson on the hit drama series This Is Us.
