Maria Bakalova is a Bulgarian actress. She began her acting career in her home country, debuting in the 2017 film titled XIIa. She then had roles in the feature films Angels, Due to Unforeseen Circumstances, Dream_Girl, and Transgression. She was next noticed for her supporting role in the movie The Father. The film was chosen as the Bulgarian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards, however, it didn’t get nominated.
Her international breakthrough came in 2020, after landing the role of Tutar Sagdiyev in the mockumentary Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. For her acting, she won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also received Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. Recently, it was announced that she was cast in Judd Apatow’s upcoming film, The Bubble.
