Jay Hernandez was born on February 20, 1978 in Montebello, California, United States. His acting career began after being discovered by a talent agent. The agent then enrolled him into an acting school. He made his television debut in 1998. During this time, he played the role of Antonio Lopez on the teen sitcom Hang Time. Afterwards, he had roles in the films Ladder 49 and Friday Night Lights.

In 2005, he played the lead in the film Hostel. He next starred in the film World Trade Center and starred in Grindhouse. During the same time, he played Carlos Green on the TV series Six Degrees. The rest of the 2000s saw him act in the films American Son and Quarantine. In the 2010s, he had supporting roles in the films Max, Bad Moms, and Suicide Squad.
