Brendan Coyle is an English-Irish actor. He had his career beginnings in the early 1990s. His first role was in the 1992 TV film Fool’s Gold: The Story of the Brink’s-Mat Robbery. Later in 1994, he made his film debut in Ailsa. He next had roles in the movies Tomorrow Never Dies, The General, and I Could Read the Sky. On TV, his first notable role was as D.S. Bob “Bingo” Tate in the TV crime drama Thief Takers. The following decade, Coyle had performances in the films The Jacket, Offside, and Perrier’s Bounty. During this period, he also starred as Robert Timmins in the TV series Lark Rise to Candleford. From 2010 to 2015, he became known for his portrayal of John Bates in Downton Abbey. He also portrayed Earl of Lennox in the film Mary Queen of Scots.
