Simon Baker was born on July 30, 1969 in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. He made his television debut on E Street and was first noticed for his role as James Hudson on the Australian soap Home and Away. He became known in Hollywood in the 2000s when he starred on the American series The Guardian, for which he received nominations.

It was also in the 2000s that he became more active as a movie actor with performances in Land of the Dead and The Devil Wears Prada. From 2006 to 2007, he also starred on the short-lived series Smith. He got further prominence in 2008 courtesy of his role as Patrick Jane on The Mentalist, which he played until 2015.
