Kyla Pratt was born on September 16, 1986 in Los Angeles, California, USA. She made her television debut in 1993 when she appeared in an episode of the television series Where I Live.

Two years after, she made her first notable role as Mindy in Barney & Friends. Her first leading role on television came in 2001 after being cast Breanna Latrice Barnes in One on One.
