Alicia Keys was born on January 25, 1980 in New York City, New York. At the age of 12, she attended the Professional Performing Arts School, where she majored in choir and began writing songs at the age of 14.

She released her debut album, Songs in A Minor, with J Records, which became a commercial success, selling over 12 million copies worldwide.

The album garnered her five Grammy Awards in 2002. She then followed it with her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, which was released the following year and was also a commercial success, selling eight million copies worldwide.
