Ruth Wilson was born on January 13, 1982 in Ashford, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. Her screen career started in 2003 when she appeared in an episode of the British series Time Commanders. Her next role came some years later, this time as the title character in the miniseries Jane Eyre. Her performance was critically praised, earning her both Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Actress.

From 2006 to 2007, she became further known as Jewel Diamond in the series Suburban Shootout. In the late 2000s, she has mostly appeared in television films before gaining significant attention for her portrayal of Alice Morgan in the series Luther (2010-2013). Since 2014, she has been playing Alison Bailey in The Affair, winning her a Golden Globe for Actress in a Television Drama. Her films are Anna Karenina, The Lone Ranger and Saving Mr. Banks.
