It was in the mid-1980s that Mariska Hargitay began her career in Hollywood. During this time she appeared in some films. She also started a career on television, which she started with guest roles. Her first notable roles on television were on Downtown and Falcon Crest. The next decade she had notable appearances on the shows Tequila and Bonetti and Can’t Hurry Love. She next appeared as recurring character Cynthia Hooper on ER. Subsequently, she starred as Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. This got her fame beginning in 1999. Until now she plays the said role. She has reprised her role on other shows, such as Law & Order, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, and Chicago P.D..

The 53-year-old actress stays radiant and in shape by living a healthy lifestyle. Aside from eating healthily, she also works out on a regular basis. Despite her busy schedule, she allots time to exercise. In an interview, she was noted for saying: “Exercise has always been a big part of my life. In the summer I swim, the rest of the time I work with a trainer. But, it’s the little things that add up.” She added: “When I’m standing around on set, I try to hold in my belly and tuck in my hips, which strengthens my core. And I live in New York, so I’m always walking around the city.”

She knows that by working out, she is able to retain high energy levels, which she needs as a mother and as an actress. She also attributes her energy to having a good sleep. She said: “There’s nothing more important. I know I wasn’t a good mom when I was sleep-deprived, and I’m not a good friend or wife. I’m really cranky and no one wants to be around me. When I get a good sleep, all of a sudden, everything is manageable!”
