Barret Swatek was born on March 3, 1977 in Birmingham, Alabama, U.S. She attended Loyola Marymount University where she finished a film degree. In 1997, she made her acting debut in an episode of Power Rangers Turbo. The following year, she made her cinematic debut in the film Lethal Weapon 4. Between 2000 and 2003, she played recurring character Cheryl in 7th Heaven.

After this, she had a role in the feature film The 40-Year-Old Virgin. She later played the part of Brittany in some episodes of the TV series Quarterlife. She then appeared as Ms. Sommers in the sitcom 10 Things I Hate About You. From 2011 to 2016, she played Ally Saxton in Awkward. As of 2017, she plays the part of Sage in the sitcom American Housewife.
