Career Beginnings and Acting Breakthrough

Shannen Maria Doherty was born on April 12, 1971 in Memphis, Tennessee to beauty parlor owner Rosa and mortgage consultant Tom Doherty. Her acting career began at age 10 when she appeared in two episodes of the TV series
Father Murphy in 1981, for which she earned a Young Artist Award nomination.

The following year, she appeared in other TV shows such as The Phoenix and Voyagers!. She then lent her voice to the 1982 animated movie The Secret of NIMH. During this time, she also landed her first major role when she was cast as Jenny Wilder in the TV series Little House on the Prairie.

After her role in Little House on the Prairie ended in 1983, she appeared in such TV programs as Magnum, P.I., Airwolf, The New Leave It to Beaver, and Highway to Heaven. In 1985, she starred as Maggie Malene in the film Girls Just Want to Have Fun. The following year, she was cast as Kris Witherspoon in the TV series Our House.

In 1988, she landed her first major film role as Heather Duke in Heathers, starring alongside Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. Despite the movie’s positive reception, it flopped at the box office but it has since become a cult classic.

She then rose to international prominence for her portrayal of Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210, earning her Young Artist and TV Land Award nominations. She played the role until 2004 when she left the series after the fourth season.

This was followed with roles in TV films such as A Burning Passion: The Margaret Mitchell Story, Blindfold: Acts of Obsession, Jailbreakers and Gone in the Night, among others. On the big screen, she starred in Almost Dead, Mallrats and made cameo appearances in the movies Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult and Nowhere.

In 1998, she returned to mainstream television after she was cast as Prue Halliwell in the critically acclaimed series Charmed. For her performance, she earned Saturn Award nominations in 1999 and 2000. She played the role until 2001 when she left the show at the end of the third season.

In the early 2000s, she starred in mostly made-for-television movies, such as Another Day, Hell on Heels: The Battle of Mary Kay, The Rendering, View of Terror, and Category 7: The End of the World. She also made a cameo appearance in the 2001 comedy film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

From 2004 to 2005, she became known for her role as Alexandra Hudson in the TV series North Shore. She went on to appear in more TV films in the late 2000s before reprising her role of Brenda Walsh as a special guest star in 90210.

Subsequent Projects and Plastic Surgery Rumors

In 2010, she became a celebrity contestant on the reality show Dancing with the Stars for its tenth season, though she and partner Mark Ballas were the first couple to be eliminated. Also in 2010, she starred as Dr. Shelly in the film Burning Palms. She will portray Katharina Bukowski in the 2014 upcoming biographical film Bukowski.

43-year-old Shannen Doherty hasn’t had plastic surgery. That’s according to the actress herself. In the past, she has been rumored of undergoing invasive procedures such as a breast augmentation and rhinoplasty but the Charmed star has since denied them.

In 2006, Doherty didn’t take it well when she saw herself on the cover of a tabloid magazine with the headline “Extreme Makeover”. The magazine claimed she had gone under the knife that resulted in a drastic physical transformation. She then appeared on the TV show The View, where she bashed the publication and said she had hired a lawyer to sue the magazine.

When asked if she really had plastic surgery, the actress responded: “No. I’m actually willing to go so far as to go sit down with whatever plastic surgeon they want to put in front of me who can inspect my face.” But in the present, Doherty is believed to be possibly using minimal Botox injections and facial fillers.

Beverly Hills Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and Rhinoplasty Specialist Dr. Paul S. Nassif also thinks she may have relied to some anti-aging treatments recently, saying: “Shannen Doherty may have had Botox and facial fillers, but that is about all. Her look still appears natural, and nothing was overdone.”
